Our people were pained to learn on Tuesday of the sudden death at 8 o’clock that morning of Mrs. Bennett Engle, the venerable mother of Mrs. W. W. Washburn, at her home in Englewood, Crawfordsville. Mrs. Engle spent much of her time with her daughter and family here, and had only returned to Crawfordsville on Monday a week ago after one of her usual visits to New Richmond. She was taken sick on Friday with grippe pneumonia and after only a five days illness died at 3 o’clock Tuesday morning, Feb. 12; aged 65 years.  Mrs. Whillie Beard Engle was the daughter of John Beard, one of the founders and early settlers of Montgomery county and the promoter of the Free Educational School System of Indiana. She was married Sept. 13, 1854, to Bennett W. Engle whose death occurred four years ago. To them were born four children, three of whom survive the mother—Ellis, of Little Rock, Ark., Mrs. W. W. Washburn of New Richmond, and Bennett B. Engle of Crawfordsville.  The funeral services will be held at the late home of the deceased at 10 o’clock this (Thursday) morning.

Mrs. Whillie Beard Engle, the widow of Bennett W. Engle died at 3 o’clock Tuesday at her home in Englewood after an illness of one week. She had been in delicate health for several years but pneumonia resulting from an attack of grip was the immediate cause of her death. Mrs Engle was the daughter of John Bear, who in the earlier days was one of the most prominent citizens of the city and state. He was an influential member for years of the state legislature and a man of such popularity that he was never beaten for office. The deceased was born at the old Beard home place but a short distance from where she died March 31, 1835.  She was married Sept 13, 1854 to Bennett Engle, who was connected with Elston’s bank until his death a few years ago.  Of four children that blessed the union three are living, Ellis at Little Rock, Ark; Mrs. Mary Washburn of New Richmond and Bennett W of this city. Mrs. Engle has been a faithful member of the Episcopal church and woman of strong Christian character. Her many noble and charitable traits endeared her to a wide circle of acquaintances and her death occasions wide spread and profound sorrow. - kbz
